Universität Der Bundeswehr Munchen (Germany)

University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich UniBwM

The Institute for Hydromechanics and Hydrology of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wilhelm Bechteler BauV6 is part of the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich UniBwM.

The university was founded in 1973. The UniBwM guarantees the scientific education of officer students of the German Federal Armed Forces. The UniBwM prepare the students for those professional tasks, which require scientific knowledge and methods. The UniBwM attends continuity and development of science and research supplying infrastructure, laboratories and computer equipment.

The Institute for Hydromechanics and Hydrology was founded in 1978.
A hydraulic laboratory of 1000m2 and an additional domain of 2400m2 for large scale models is part of the institute.

The institute fulfills educational and research tasks.

The research at the Institute for Hydromechanics and Hydrology during the last years was focussed on:

  • Development and application of numerical models
  • Investigations on gated installations
  • Investigations on the simulation of photovoltaical pumping systems

General topics included in those research projects are:

  • flooding and inundation
  • dam-break
  • sediment transport
  • flow in sewerage systems
  • photovoltaic

The institute has 21 employees including the 8 employees of the loboratory.

Experience
Researcher and senior hydraulic engineer
Works on computational hydraulics since 1988, specialist for the simulation of flood inundation and breach formation
Studied in Aachen and Munich; HCM-fellowship at DHI; researcher at UniBw Munich. Phd-thesis on "Computational Analysis of Dam-erosion"

Role within IMPACT

  • Definition of uncertainty in breach modelling
  • Breach formation modelling and fitting with physical and field testing
  • Determination of flood risk from breach at discrete locations along river bank flood defences
